Pregnancy Massage in San Luis Obispo

Pregnancy massage or prenatal massage is massage done side-lying to avoid pressure on the uterus. Massage therapists performing prenatal massage require special training so they know how to position you to prevent strain on the uterine ligaments.

Pregnancy massage aims to relieve common issues that come with pregnancy, which may include anxiety, depression, neck aches, back aches, and reduced circulation of blood and lymph. Massage during pregnancy has been shown to help with each of these issues as it can increase circulation, relax tense muscles, and even improve mood. One study showed that women who received bi-weekly massage for only five weeks showed reduced stress hormones, and increased “happy” hormones (dopamine and serotonin, which can be low in depressed individuals).

Swelling and edema can also be a result of pregnancy, and again massage is an effective response as the pressure of the massage helps to overcome the pressure of the uterus which impaired the flow of bodily fluids.

Even after pregnancy, changes in the back and hips can persist, leading to postpartum back pain. Massage during this time can be helpful as well.

Precautions and contraindications for prenatal massage:
Some evidence shows increased risk of miscarriage with massage given in the first trimester.
When there are signs of pre-term birth such as pre-term contractions, bleeding, or previous pre-term labor, it is best to consult a health care provider before receiving a massage.
